Most lessons are built around exams. Mine are built around what you want.

01

Play for pleasure

Want to play to a really high standard but not too fussed about grade certificates? Perfect, we skip the exams and spend the time on music that actually excites you, whilst still progressing to any skill level.

02

Your favourite songs

Pop, film themes, classical, whatever's stuck in your head, we learn the pieces you actually want to play, from your very first lesson.

03

I come to you

No need for a piano at home or a trek across town. I come to you and bring a full-size keyboard, so lessons happen in your home at a time that suits you.

George as a child at a keyboard
Where it all started

Hi, I'm George.

I first sat down at a piano in my grandma's house when I was 10. No teacher or lesson plan, I just wanted to play my favourite songs. Aside from a few great mentors over the years, I've never had a formal instrument lesson. I'm completely self-taught.

My first experience of music education came later, at college, where I did an Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production and came away with a distinction. It's where I made many of my industry contacts and figured out what I wanted to do in music.

Most of the musicians I work with learnt with the standard grades route. I didn't, and I think that's why I fell in love with playing in the first place. I felt no pressure, no sight-reading, just music I wanted to play. It also means I learn fast and by ear, which is exactly what I teach: how to actually play, and more importantly, enjoy it.

What a lesson actually looks like.

I started out learning by watching YouTube tutorials, one song at a time, until I could pick most things up just by listening. That's exactly how I teach, and here's what a lesson looks like.

I arrive with the keyboard. We start with a conversation, to find out what makes you passionate and what you want to achieve. From there we set some goals: it might be a song, a particular style, or a favourite artist.

Then we dig right in and start hitting those keys. By the end of the lesson you'll have things to think about and some practice to do before the next one. If you've got a keyboard at home, great, and if not, no problem. Like I mentioned, the best way to learn a song or a tricky section is by listening and wrapping your head around it.

Based by Alexandra Palace, I teach across North London:

Right on my doorstep

Muswell Hill · Crouch End · Highgate · Wood Green · Hornsey · Bounds Green · Finsbury Park · East Finchley

A little further by arrangement

Finchley · Palmers Green · Islington · Stroud Green · and nearby — just ask and we'll see if it works.

Payment by cash or bank transfer, per lesson or in blocks. Life happens, so I'm happy to rearrange at short notice, and I only ask the same understanding in return if I ever need to. As long as we keep each other in the loop, it's never a problem.

What fellow musicians say.

Alongside teaching, I work as a session musician and in live events as a production professional, and I play drums and bass too. I've played all over the UK, in small theatres such as the Watford Colosseum, Southend Palace and St Albans' Alban Arena, all the way up to the Royal Albert Hall. I've also toured the country in a support act for The Amy Winehouse Band, then stayed on as their production technician for the rest of the run.

Working across both the performance and production sides of the industry has let me meet and play with all kinds of people along the way. Here's what some of them have to say.

Questions parents & students ask.

Do we need a piano or keyboard at home?
Not to get started — I bring a full keyboard to every lesson. That said, having something to practise on between lessons makes a big difference to how quickly you progress. If you're thinking of buying one, I'm happy to point you towards a good, affordable beginner keyboard.
What areas do you cover?
I'm based right by Alexandra Palace and teach across the surrounding North London neighbourhoods — [confirm your radius, e.g. Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Wood Green, Hornsey, Highgate and Bounds Green]. If you're just outside that, get in touch anyway and we'll see if it works.
How young can children start?
Usually from around 5, though it really depends on the child. What matters most is that they're keen and can focus for a short lesson — I keep things relaxed and fun, so there's no pressure. If you're not sure whether your child's ready, the free first lesson is a perfect way to find out.
I've never played before — is that okay?
Completely. Most of the people I teach start from scratch, and plenty are adults coming back to it or trying for the first time. There's no such thing as being "too late" or "not musical enough" — we start wherever you are and build from there.
Do I have to do grades and exams?
Not at all — that's rather the whole point. I teach for the love of playing, not for certificates. We focus on the music you actually want to play. If you ever decided you wanted to work towards a grade, we could, but it's never the goal unless you want it to be.
How does payment work?
Simple as possible: cash or bank transfer, paid per lesson or in blocks — whatever suits you. And if you buy 10 lessons, you get 1 free. Your very first lesson is always free, with no commitment to carry on.
